EXCERPT FROM THE LONG NIGHT

Gross Rosen

“By this time I still had 300 marks that I had managed to keep hidden. Though it was illegal, this had been sent by my Uncle to Meister Hermann for me when I was in Fünfteichen. I was sorely tempted to part with it in exchange for a bowl of soup, but I managed to resist this temptation. I had learned from four years experience in concentration camps that there are some life and death moments. I clung to this modest sum so that I would have the option to use it to purchase some help later on.”
