EXCERPT FROM THE LONG NIGHT

Fünfteichen

“We thought that our Block Elders were expected to achieve a weekly quota of at least ten dead prisoners. We had no doubt about the correctness of this claim. The evidence was irrefutable. However, we could never discover whether this was part of a planned process of destruction or merely the initiative of the local camp leadership, i.e. the Kapos. In any case, it would have made little difference to us even if we had known the origin of these measures. Resistance was impossible; all we could do was to continuously strive to avoid the worst of the slavery torture that lay in wait for new victims.”
